Dan went missing early in the morning on April 5th, 2009. His body was found on Friday, May 1st, 2009.

Donations assist in Dan's case by financing outside resources, such as the private investigators.
During the active search for Dan, finances helped pay for the bus trips which sent volunteers to St. Paul. Funds also contributed to administrative expenses including printing costs for flyers, phone bills, food for volunteers, and other search supplies. Donations also went toward food and living expenses for his family while they lived in St. Paul during the search.
Donations are accessible by Dan's parents, and his parents disperse the funds accordingly. Although no one is paid for volunteering, FindDan.org is not a 501(c)(3), so donations are not tax exempt.
